Awesome interview & session summary, Dan! Jenn wasn’t so bad herself… I’m wondering why she doesn’t just jump in and take over the family business. (Nothin’ like owning, than renting a job!)
I’m often asked questions about the hiring process by my clients – dealing with it with one of my clients right now. My area is devoid of young people – braindrain to NYC. Last year, a local college (C.W. Post of LIU) invited me to talk about personal branding and the interview process.
Your points were fantastic. The last part, where Jenn stressed her leadership skills through her extra-curricular activities was great. Nowadays, a good GPA in the relevant field is expected (and obligatory). Its the leadership skills, discipline, and worth ethic that really shine.
A memorable hobby/activity also helps too: competitive sync skating.
(wow… I remember when I was always the youngest professional in the room – ahem, 3 yrs ago)

This is a great idea. It’d be cool to intersperse some shots of the actual resume to spice it up a bit too. I’m looking forward to future episodes!

Dan, your introduction and interview with Jenn were very interesting. The resume work is also well done, in my professional opinion. I really enjoyed your session!
As you are conducting Personal Branding, one thing I would add is helping the student focus on what differentiates her from others in her same position, what makes her unique and special, and not a commodity. She has a very interesting background and her professional experience screams hard working – ambitious, attributes that any great company looks for. I would talk with her about what else sets her apart, and incorporate it if not directly in the resume at least in an elevator pitch.
Best,
