Networking Tip: The Business Card Bookmark

When I connected with Andrea Nierenberg, networking extraordinaire, last month through blogging, I had no idea that she would also send me one of her best selling books called “Million Dollar Networking.” I haven’t been able to finish it, but after reading the first 50 pages, it’s safe to say that this book will change your life both socially and professionally. She identifies many aspects of how to build a strong network through engaging in events, using collateral such as business cards as conversation pieces and helping others first before even asking for their help. Once I received this book, that also had her signature and a quick note “all the best”, I quickly thanked her and our relationship continued. At the same time, I had just received my new Personal Brand Business Cards to get ready for the release of DanSchawbel.com. The business cards share the design, experience and features of the new website which will debut later this month. After reading about how important it is to always have a business card on hand when networking, I decided to use my new business card as a bookmark. Just by reading her book, which had her Personal Brand right on the front cover, and using my business card as a bookmark, I was promoting two Personal Brands simultaneously. I was able to learn about networking, while reading about networking at the same time as well, when I met a small business owner who was interested in my work experience.
You never know when you might make a new contact or open a new opportunity, so find new ways of having material with you at all times. When reading a book on an airplane, near a pool, while in jury duty or on a bus, you are around others that can quickly identify or hold interest in your activity and brand. Remember to always showcase your brand in any networking experience and become memorable to your audience through your message.

Dan, I think Andrea’s advice is great. I especially like the point she makes about “helping others first before even asking for their help.” The best and most lasting connections come from being genuinely interested in another person’s passions. In other words, make the other person interesting!

It is awesome who you meet through blogging! And, whether your analog or digital, knowing what the other person values; their definition of success; is ultimately more important than what you want to show them. It’s about relationships and people and knowing what’s important to them show that you value them.
