What is the real definition of Personal Branding? New project!

September 17, 2007 at 10:43 am | In Futures, Networking, Personal Branding, social media |

My latest project is to collaborate with experts in the Personal Branding field, in order to get a more refined and single definition of Personal Branding. I think one of the major problems that I face, along with all of you is that when we are asked “so what is Personal Branding?”, we give our own definitions that may seem a bit ubiquitous. When you have hundreds of professionals working in this field, all giving their own interpretation of Personal Branding, it becomes inconsistent and loses meaning. This can be solved quite easily, by taking all the experts and letting them create a single definition that everyone can agree on. We will be using a wiki, which allows you to edit a predefined definition again and again, while logging revisions. This exercise will start today and end close to February, where I will take our definition and put it in Personal Branding Magazine Issue 3, as well as communicate it to publishers around the world (School Text Books, etc).

  • Description: A group of experts focusing on establishing the real definition of Personal Branding, through experience and point-of-view.
  • Challenge: There are too many sources of Personal Branding, with inconsistent messaging, leading to confusion of the term.
  • Goal: To develop a single definition of Personal Branding that can be consistently communicated across all media.
  • Rules: We will start with the current Wikipedia definition and then edit it from now until February 2008, until it has the subject matter expertise to be considered “official.” After editing the definition, please put your name at the bottom of the page under “Project Experts,” along with a link to your website. Please refrain from any excessive edits, as we need a complete view of the term.

  1. Dan, you’ve got a good idea, here. I like the concept.

“We will start with the current Wikipedia definition and then edit it from now until February 2008,…”

Is there a plan to feed back into the original Wikipedia definition?

  8. I’ve just been Googling branding terms and looking at glossaries. I wanted to find a comprehensive and authoritative list of descriptions, as so many people find it confusing – especially the difference between brand and identity – and new terms are being coined regularly.

One of the best is the comprehensive glossary on Brand Channel http://www.brandchannel.com/education_glossary.asp but there’s a glaring oversight. They haven’t included a definition for “personal branding”. There’s a link on the page to submit entries if you’re interested. :)
