The origins of Personal Branding: 10th Anniversary Timeline
October 5, 2007 at 1:29 am | In Futures, Personal Branding, news | 5 CommentsPersonal Branding has come a long way since Tom Peter’s Fast Company article in 1997. I’m happy to say I’ve been apart of history, along with many others who share my passions. There are many other landmarks in the history of Personal Branding, but the one’s listed in the timeline above have helped further the development of the practice and extended it’s reach throughout the world. If there is a major topic that isn’t listed, please let me know and I will include it. Feel free to use this graphic on your website or to cite it as a resource.
One magazine article has changed the lives of many and the face of business forever. Thanks to Tom Peters for his vision, and leaders such as William Arruda, his strategists, Peter Montoya, Tim O’Brien, Rejesh Setty and others that have helped change lives and develop careers based on this practice.
The 10th anniversary of Personal Branding will be celebrated on November 8th (1 year from Tom’s article) through a global telesumit event. As one of the leaders in Personal Branding, I will be managing sponsorships for this event, so please email me if you are interested. All proceeds from the event will support running the event and will be donated to Kiva.org. The event will focus on career management success, talent management and entrepreneurship. It’s free to attend for participants.
Confirmed speakers and moderators to-date for this event include Guy Kawasaki, John Jantch, Debbie Weil, Phil Gerbyshak, Silvia Cambié, Andrea Kay, Anita Bruzzese, Marci Alboher, William Arruda, Martin Yate, Jason Alba, Catherine Kaputa, Stewart Emery, and Kirsten Dixson.

Nice visual on the personal branding timeline. I certainly would have added Tom Peters Brand You 50 in ‘99 as a definative event – certainly what started me on the whole personal branding direction.
There are so many books out there on the subject that its difficult to include others. But again personally I would have left off Montoya’s first one (just a dreadful read), especially as his 2nd book – The Brand Called You is excellent in comparison and came out just a year later.
Also for those taking the subject to new areas -
Robin Fisher Roffer – Make a Name for Yourself for specifically writing for women and D’Alessandro’s Career Warfare for using personal branding inside a corporation is entertaining with some good tips would also be good timelines.
Just my toonies worth!
