Laid Back Friday 1/25/08: Brand Mystery 8, a Song and a Question

January 25, 2008 at 11:43 am | In Brand Mystery, Personal Branding | 4 Comments

The best part about Friday’s is that after work or your last class, you have the whole weekend to have fun and rejuvenate. Here at Personal Branding Blog, I am now offering you relief from a long week reading countless entires on self-branding, amongst other blogs and news sources. In order to make Friday’s as fun as they should be, I’m now enlisting the “Brand Mystery” game, a song of the week and answer a question of the week for your viewing pleasure. By the time you’re finished guessing the brand below, listening to the song and thinking about the posed question, you’ll be way on your way to saying “TGIF.” If you leave a comment on this post requesting your favorite song, I may play it next Friday!

Brand Mystery is a game where you guess who the personal brand is below. The person who guesses the correct answer first receives a link on the next autopsy post.

Question from Jen: What happens when everybody else gets a blog and uses every social network connection they have to land a job? Will you still stand out?

My Answer: Jen, this is an interesting question. I think part of the competitive advantage now is having a blog, being prolific and engaging in conversation on various social networks. Remember that personal branding is less about the delivery channels and more about who you are and what you can offer. When everyone has a blog in the future, there will be a new technology or strategy that you can discover that will give you an advantage.

  1. A few years ago, simply having a web site used to be the advantage. Then, if it was applicable to your job, having an online portfolio was the differentiator. For many (like you, Dan), this is what a blog is, really. A “talent showcase”, if you will. This just has evolved from something that used to be purely visual to something far more descriptive with a lot more context.

As you said, something new really will come along. What will it be? Hard to say. For coders, I really think it is going to be participation in open source. Getting some of your code out there is one sure way to show you know what you’re doing. So, for others it might be some other form of “open source work”, whether it is personal research you have done or other personal projects that you offer up for free.

Great question, though, and one that all the super passionate folks are going to have to keep an eye on to keep that edge.

  3. Whilst I agree that new technologies will allow us to differentiate, I think waiting for these to come is not an ideal approach.

There are many ways in which you can stand out at the moment, all it takes is a little creativity and the guts to do something about it – Youtube videos, software, interesting article series and other remarkable internet gadgets, will provide you with a plethora of opportunities.

I also believe that personal branding is about creating relationships and using these relationships for good. So, spend some time finding the leaders in your field and make friends with them, through social media, email or otherwise. Why not even organise a meet up of the local people in your industry? That way, you can leverage your relationships to help get your name out and in good company.

While you’re waiting for the next new technology to help you differentiate, why not do some homework and look for other ways to connect and give value to people?
