Great post Dan. I practice what you preach: Though I run a brand consultancy, I use my blog strictly as a personal soapbox for stimulating marketing discussions. Because of this, I use my 'unique' first and last name, www.josiahslivingston.com as my domain name which I redirect to my blog.

My agency J. Livingston Marketing Group, is hosted on a separate site with a corporate url. I therefore have a distinction between my personal brand and corporate brand.

Of course, I've had issues with my unique name being difficult to spell... LOL

@Joe - when you use .wordpress.com it's not as professional and you don't "own it." When you host your blog using a service, then it's yours and you can use any plug-ins and templates you want, as well as do a custom template.

Hi Dan, can you clarify the personal branding implications of using wordpress, when you say, "One of the mistakes I made early in my personal branding career is that I used wordpress.com to host my blog for free." Why do you consider that choice a mistake?
