Word of mouth is as ancient as the origins of humanity. People used it (and still do) to warn, signal and identify what's going on around them. The most interesting thing is the apparent 'judgment' values that are created when someone who we know - tells us something. In turn, this can influence the decision making process - and as seen - the whole outlook of whatever scenario changes.

One of the best ways to combat this is to find out for yourself by verifying as much as you can. That way you make the final decision at what's best for you.
