First, congrats Dan for getting such a candid interview out of Mike Volpe. Congrats to Mike as well, for not feeling shy about promoting yourself while promoting the company.

I come from a country [India] where personal branding is often seen as a parasitical activity. People often blame you when you leave a company, because they feel and want others to feel that you 'used' to company to build your own reputation. This sort of emanates from the whole debate of who is the bigger - the company or the guy promoting it. It's a bit sad, because what you were doing in the first place was to promote the company. And truthfully, do we really believe an individual can ever be bigger than a company?

That said, I agree with Mike 100% on the point he made about building something that would outlast you and stay with the company. It's such an important part of expressing your gratitude to the company that built you as much as you helped build it.

Cheers.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! Wow!

What is really cool about this article is that it too was inbound - Dan has been checking out some of the HubSpot content and we follow each other on Twitter, and then he contacted me asking to chat about marketing.

A couple clarifications...

I do not claim to have first coined the term inbound marketing. But I do talk about it a lot and try to practice as much of it as possible.

I think Lewis's definition of inbound marketing is an older one that is totally valid. But I do think that people are starting to use inbound marketing in a new context, more around how to attract customers into your business in contrast to outbound marketing.

Mike is a really smart guy but I don't think he coined Inbound Marketing, which has been around for several decades and originally had nothing to do with social mediai and still mostly doesn't.

Inbound Marketing aligns marketing, sales, the customer call center around all customer touchpoints in order to gather data on what our customers most want and need and then analysing the data to predict the best ways that we can meet those wants and needs. CRM meets some of our business needs but more advanced predictability software has taken Inbound Marketing to new levels.

I really love mike and his mates. They really build great contents on every move. Now I take at least half a hour a day to see hubspot postings.

Their software is clouded wholly by their content. I don't know who ever coined the term inbound marketing, but I can tell you Hubspot is one company that really made it worth trusting.

I didn't know you. But to day I bookmarked your blog, because Karen posted a twit. I'll see your blog and site each week surely.

Salute to the total hubspot team and specially Mike. He does what he says. I was really surprised how first he followed me back in twitter.

Thanks to you for this interview Dan
